Frequently asked questions
What makes Nine Antenatal classes different?
We’re the only midwives currently working in both private care on birthing suite and in theatre at Auckland Hospital offering antenatal education. This means we’re regularly involved in births and can offer you calm, grounded, up to date insights into how things typically unfold at the hospital where you'll be having your baby. Our classes are designed specifically for this environment, they are not one size fits all.
We’re also proudly endorsed by the Auckland Obstetric Centre (AOC) for our high-quality, evidence-based care and the continuity we offer families who birth in this system.
We understand that you’ve already prioritised your health and wellbeing by choosing private obstetric care. Choosing antenatal education that reflects those same values is the natural next step. Our sessions are designed to support your confidence and clarity as you prepare for birth and early parenting.
When in my pregnancy should I start classes?
It’s ideal to complete your classes by 28 weeks (the end of the second trimester), while you’re still feeling relatively comfortable, alert, and able to focus, before the third trimester brings more physical changes and fatigue. Booking early also means you can begin accessing support and resources sooner, and secure a spot in the group that suits your due date best.
We cannot make the class for our due date, can we pick a different class?
Can’t make the recommended dates? No problem, you’re welcome to book into any class that best suits your schedule, no matter your baby's due date. Our recommendation is a guide for your comfort.
Why have you chosen 2 x 4-hour sessions instead of a full day or weekly classes?
From experience and client feedback, we’ve found that one full-day class can feel overwhelming, and a six-week course can be hard to maintain momentum. Two half-day sessions offer a balanced, practical approach giving you time to absorb what you learn and return with questions. It also allows us to begin offering ongoing support shortly after your classes.
Are these classes suitable for first-time and experienced parents?
Yes. Our classes are ideal for first-time parents looking for clear, practical information, but they’re also valued by those who’ve had a baby before.
We regularly receive feedback from families we’ve supported during labour, birth, and the postnatal period that they wish they’d had access to our breadth and depth of knowledge earlier in their journey. Whether it’s your first or third baby, we aim to give you the tools, context, and confidence to feel prepared and empowered this time around.
I already have a Lead Maternity Carer (LMC). Do I still need antenatal classes?
Our clients all have skilled obstetricians or midwives caring for them, but they often tell us they’re looking for more time, space, and support to explore what’s ahead. Our classes gently complement your existing care, helping you feel more confident, informed, and connected throughout your birth and postnatal experience.
Do your classes cover both vaginal and caesarean births?
Yes. Because we work regularly in both the birthing suite and theatre, we’re well placed to help you feel prepared for whichever path your birth takes, planned or unplanned. We aim to reduce uncertainty and increase your sense of calm and readiness—however things unfold.
How many people are in each class?
We keep class sizes small so you have space to ask questions, connect with others, and receive personalised support. We want you to feel relaxed, seen, and part of a shared experience, not just an audience.
How should I prepare for class?
Please wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move freely, and bring a water bottle to stay hydrated. You may also like to bring a yoga mat or cushion for extra comfort during seated activities. Everything else you need will be provided — just come with an open mind and a willingness to learn!
Can my partner or support person attend too?
Yes, and we encourage it. Our classes are designed to support both you and your chosen birth partner. They’ll leave feeling more confident in their role, more informed about what to expect, and better equipped to support you on the day.
I’m not sure if this is right for me. Can I speak to someone first?
Of course. We’re happy to chat and help you decide whether Nine Antenatal is the right fit for you and your whānau. There’s no pressure, just genuine support and open conversation. Flick us an email at admin@nineantenatal.com to chat.
How do we choose the right antenatal class for us?
It helps to start by looking at who’s teaching the class. Are they currently working with birthing families? Do they understand the hospital or setting you’ll be giving birth in?
Choosing midwives who are actively involved in labour, birth, and postnatal care means you’re learning from people who understand what actually happens, not just the textbook version.
It’s also important to choose a class that aligns with your values. For example, if you're planning a homebirth, a class focused on homebirthing may feel more relevant. If you’re birthing in a hospital, it can be helpful to learn from midwives who regularly support births in that environment.
At Nine Antenatal, we’re practising midwives who work in private care, the birthing suite, and theatre. We bring our experience, empathy, and up-to-date knowledge to every session—so you can feel reassured and well-prepared for what’s ahead.
What happens after the classes, can I still reach out with questions?
Absolutely! Many families say they value Nine Antenatal not just for the education, but for the ongoing, wrap-around support. After the classes, you’ll be invited to live Q&A sessions and given access to further resources. We're still here for you, supporting you as part of your wider village.
Will we stay in touch with the other families after the class?
Yes. Connection doesn’t end when the classes finish. We invite you to join Nine Village, our version of a coffee group. It’s a relaxed space to stay in touch with like-minded parents, share experiences, arrange catch-ups and continue supporting one another into early parenthood. Having a village makes a difference. We'd love to help you find yours.
